these boots were(n’t) made for walkin’

true story:  my husband scored a job in indianapolis four years ago.  as a southern girl, i was more than a little intimidated by the thought of an indiana winter, but you go where the work is.  i stepped off the plane in indy in snowy february, and was promptly laughed at by every. single. hoosier.  thanks, guys… nothing like a little midwestern hospitality to make you feel right at home.  why were they laughing, you ask?  i had on my south carolina (unlined) rubber rain boots.  turns out rain boots suck at keeping your feet warm.  this was the first in a series of wardrobe adjustments i’ve had to make since moving north.  more on that in a second.

style icons

as promised in the #mythursdaythreads “inaugural post,” i am sharing my style and predicting spring 2018 trends.  i’ll talk about my closet this week, and talk about what i want in my closet for spring next week.  moving along.  to get a better sense of your style, you must first think about your fashion icons; those women or men who know themselves and own their look.  my style icons include:

  • grace kelly, the ultimate in timeless beauty
  • jacqueline kennedy onassis, a trailblazer who captivated the world with her pearls and her put-together charm
  • nancy sinatraa blonde beauty with big hair, mini skirts, go-go boots, and a message of female empowerment
  • edith head, the award-winning fashion designer from hollywood’s golden age who created costumes for grace kelly, kim novak, and so many others
  • kate mossa model who makes fashion waves even when she’s not on the catwalk

knowing your icons can help you identify your own sense of style.  my icons exude confidence; they are women who weren’t (aren’t) afraid to take risks or stand out in a crowd.  i try to emulate those qualities in the way i dress, and the way i carry myself.  i don’t always succeed, but everyone hates that one over-achiever who always succeeds, anyway.  correct me if i’m wrong.

so, what about the rain boots?

yes, back to the wardrobe adjustment.  you change because of necessity, but i decided i wanted to do more than buy some random pair of winter boots.  my salvation (if you will) has come in the form of multiple fashion finds, and giving voice to my creativity.  my style is girly and bold and glam.  there is a lot of color.  i basically only wear dresses or skirts (i have a drawer full of tights and leggings for the winter months).  i love hosting dinner parties, so i buy full-length bridesmaid dresses from j. crew and wear them like maxi dresses (try it sometime – it’s so fun).  i have fuchsia sandals.  i have a louis vuitton handbag that i saved up for an entire year to buy… i was working for a nonprofit, but #fashion.

the list could go on, but i’ll share just one more for anecdotal purposes.  i am in love with hunter boots.  they come in a million gorgeous colors (and now there are glittery ones and bow-backed ones and some that do your damn taxes for you… j/k about the last one.  but that would be cool), and i recently found some in glossy pink.  swoon.  those are attention-getters, for sure.  even better, i can wear them year-round thanks to the wool sock inserts.  today, hunter announced it is partnering with target to create a line of rain boots, so i am guessing i’ll have a pair in every color/style soon.

fashion isn’t everyone’s forte.  i get that.  but for me, fashion is so much more than just clothing on hangers.  it’s a way of approaching life and realizing what you love.  it’s discovering what makes you you.  it’s having the confidence to put that creative energy out there.
